The Region

Zhang Jia Jie Municipality, located at 29° N and 110° E, is a booming tourist city in the northwest of Hunan Province. Formerly known as Dayong, the city got its new name in 1994 from the Zhang Jia Jie National Forest Park. The Municipality has 15 million people and is divided into Yongding, Wulingyuan districts and Cili, Sangzhi counties.

In 1992 the World Heritage Committee of the UNESCO inscribed it on the World Heritage List, saying that "as a cultural and natural site of exceptional and universal value, Wulingyuan requires protection for the benefit of all humanity".

Zhang Jia Jie is also home to minority nationalities such as Tujia, Bai and Miao.
Not far from Zhang Jia Jie Municipality are some of the most popular tourist attractions in China: Taohuayuan (Peach Blossom Stream), Mengdonghe River, the Three Gorges and Guilin.  Eight kilometres south of Zhang Jia Jie City proper stands a solitary mountain 1'518 meters above the sea level. It looks like a huge platform, with precipitous sides. On the Eastern side there is a huge cavern that runs south and north like a gate, hence its name Tianmen (the Gate to Heaven). The gate is 132 meters high, 37 meters wide and 70 meters deep. At the foot of the Mountain lies the Zhang Jia Jie airport.

17 OCT – 1999 HONDA NIPPON GRAND PRIX

A leg of the FAI World Grand Prix of Aviation was successfully completed this weekend at the Twin Ring Motegi mobility circuit, Japan. It was the first time the event in Japan was sponsored by Honda.

15 DEC – ZHANG JIA JIE, CHINA

Great success of the FAI World Grand Prix at Zhang Jia Jie, China...
In the Guinness Book of Records...
After the Honda Grand Prix, held earlier in Japan, Jurgis Kairys, from Lithuania, won in Zhang Jia Jie, China, the last leg of the year ahead of Viktor Tchmal (Russia) and Peter Besenyei (Hungary). Kairys is now well in the lead of this second Grand Prix Series that will run until the end of the year 2000.

Broadcast live by CCTV, the National Chinese TV, and distributed world wide to one billion TV viewers, the flight through "The Gate to Heaven" (a natural cave in the mountain, 130m high, 30m wide and 70m deep) was performed by the Grand Prix pilots to demonstrate precision flying and to symbolise the passage into the new Millennium.

Winner of the first Grand Prix Series, Peter Besenyei was designated to be officially the first pilot to fly through this natural cave, and thus, entered the Guinness Book of Records.
